Mary & Max

Almost two years ago (and I remember the date because it was a special day for me) I had been to Anima Mundi, an yearly animation festival held in my city, São Paulo. I was picking a random animation movie to watch and happened to see an australian one named Mary & Max. I was surprised to find out that the main characters of this movie were two penpals, and I completely fell in love with their story, so, since then, I like to recommend it to any snail mail lover.

Mary is a very lonely little girl living in Australia, who one day picks a name on an adress list and decides to write a letter to that person. The person was Max, an old and also lonely man with Aspergers living in New York, and he decides to write her back.

The movie, told by a narrator plus their own letters, shows their lifetime friendship through letters, and also talks about many life issues. It is an adult and a lot serious animation, that brings a beautiful story.

You can watch the trailer, and some extras, on the movie's official website.

That's my tip for today, if you're needing new movies for your list. I hope you all enjoy it!

  3. I enjoyed this movie very much, too! It is difficult to watch in places ... some very graphic images and language, but it all fits the story.

Thank you for helping with Orphaned Postcard Project! I have an envelope, with a note about the project and additions, heading out to you tomorrow. Must feed that hungry mailbox of yours :)

  4. I saw Mary and Max for the first time a few weeks ago and I really loved it! Recently, I read an interview with the director, who said its inspired by his experience with his penpal. I thought that was really neat.
