Mary & Max

Almost two years ago (and I remember the date because it was a special day for me) I had been to Anima Mundi, an yearly animation festival held in my city, São Paulo. I was picking a random animation movie to watch and happened to see an australian one named Mary & Max. I was surprised to find out that the main characters of this movie were two penpals, and I completely fell in love with their story, so, since then, I like to recommend it to any snail mail lover.

Mary is a very lonely little girl living in Australia, who one day picks a name on an adress list and decides to write a letter to that person. The person was Max, an old and also lonely man with Aspergers living in New York, and he decides to write her back.

The movie, told by a narrator plus their own letters, shows their lifetime friendship through letters, and also talks about many life issues. It is an adult and a lot serious animation, that brings a beautiful story.

You can watch the trailer, and some extras, on the movie's official website.

That's my tip for today, if you're needing new movies for your list. I hope you all enjoy it!

Stationery giveaway

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, there were little girls that collected stationery. They did it just for the fun, and kept the stationery untouched. These little girls grew up an decided to give their collections to other girls, who would like to write letters on those beautiful papers and spread them throughout the world.

I'm one of those lucky girls who inherited lots of vintage stationery. They are most part of my supplies nowadays, and, in order to promote my new and still shy blog, and also to put a smile on someone's face, I want to give some of it for a reader!

To participate, all you have to do is:
- follow my blog;
- leave a comment on this post, with your e-mail or any other way for me to contact you.

On August 4th, I'll pick up one random winner, who will receive an envelope with:

- a selection of these vintage stationery;
- some stickers;
- a few postcards;
- a little surprise;
- love.

You must know that these stationery are the kind that has one side completely printed, so that you must use the other side to write. They're lovely, I guarantee!

The subscription is quite easy, and will surely make me happy.

So, let's start the fun!

And here is my first post about my mail. :D

Incoming

A 3D postcard from my friend Junney, in Taiwan. The picture can't show the awesomeness of the 3D.

A letter that traveled too long, from my friend Teresa, in the U.S.A. She sent me a beautiful gift, that will soon have its own post.

 Outgoing

A letter to Kerri

That's all for a while. :) I have lots of letters to reply, which is great. I hope I'll find some time to prepare them this weekend, on the time between sleeping a lot, playing games and watching Brave on the theatre!

For booklovers

One very important thing about me (okay, maybe not THAT important, but, well, a thing) is that I smell books. I can't buy or read a book before opening and smelling it, it seems that it's just as addictive as drugs. So, I've got pretty happy to find out that other crazy people like me are worried about spreading the book smell all around. Someone created a perfume with new books odor!

I wonder how I would love hugging someone that smells like a book. Ten times better than Victoria's Secret or else!

And here's some other impressive creation for lazy booklovers who, like me, have too much books and keep postponing reading them.

Anybody else feeling desesperate for the readers of these books?

Brand new blog!

Greetings!

Welcome to my newest blog, Hippo Mail. This is where I will post about my life, my mail and other interests.

I'm Bárbara (Penny!), a 22 years old university student (soon graduating as a book editor/publisher!) from Brazil. I love snail mail and have been into it since I was 13. I've been reading lots of penpal blogs lately and got really excited to create one of my own. Penpalling is one of my favorite hobbies, the one that makes me excited to come home everyday, looking forward to whatever some friend far far away sent to make me smile. It's a really addictive hobby. I hope I'll have much mail to show you all on this blog.

But I won't write only topic I will talk about. I also have other interests to share, such as photography, movies, video games and books. And I plan to post here many interesting things about all of my many passions!

Readers must be awared that this blog may be written on a terrible English, by a girl who is still practising this language. And, ocasionally, I may post something in Portuguese too.

Please say hello and come back soon to read me! :D

I'm Penny. Nice to meet you!
